Christian and Barbara Luginbuhl Schumacher






Christian Schumacher was born Oct. 7, 1782, in Florimont, Alsace Loraine, France, to Hans and Catharine (Luginbuhl) Schumacher. Christian married Barbara Elizabeth Luginbuhl on June 14, 1810, at Chaluet, Obt (district) Moutier in Canton Bern, Switzerland.

Barbara was born on March 11, 1781, to Hans and Barbara (Luginbuhl) Luginbuhl with no more additional information available for her parents. Christian’s parents remained in Switzerland.

Christian’s brother, Johannes, established a saw mill near Riley Creek and sawed timber for his father’s house, which was built in 1843. This house is owned today by the Swiss Community Historical Society on Bixel Road..

Christian, Sr., and Barbara had six children. Barbara, Christian Jr., Katherine, Johannes, Peter and Jacob. Katherine and Jacob died in Switzerland while Barbara, Christian, Jr., Johannes and Peter came with their parents in 1835.

Barbara, the oldest married Peter Steiner on Feb. 24, 1835, in Florimont, France, and they had 11 children. Christian, Jr., was single and died at the age of 36 on March 11, 1849. Johanne married Barbara Steiner on Dec. 2, 1838, in Wayne County, Ohio, and they had nine children with several moving to other areas of the country.

Peter married Elizabeth Suter on Aug. 10, 1839, in Putnam County, Ohio, Elizabeth is the daughter of Christian and Magdalena (Steiner) Suter. The family of Peter and Elizabeth had 16 children, and all grew to adulthood, married and gave them 163 grandchildren.

Christian, Sr., died in 1858 at the age of 76 and Barbara died in 1855 at age 74. Both are buried in the Old Mennonite Cemetery, on Phillips Road.

It is not known when Peter and Elizabeth moved back to his father’s farm. Peter died on May 28, 1881, at age 62 and Elizabeth died Oct. 12, 1897, at the age of 75. They are also buried in the Old Mennonite Cemetery.

Christian had a brother, John and sisters, Verena and Katharina, who also came to America.
